Local youth Leif Copley was awarded the 2020 Youth of the Year award.

Copley was presented with a certificate and the $1,000 prize from the Chantal Bérubé Memorial Fund at the Chantal Bérubé Youth Centre (CBYC) on Friday, Sept. 18. Copley was named the winner of the Youth of the Month award in November 2019.

“It was pretty crazy to be honest. It came as a surprise; it was a really special moment,” Copley said.

“A portion of the money is going to go to charity, a portion of the money I’m going to save and the other little bit I have left I’m going to put back into my music.”

Copley is a Grade 11 student at École Secondaire Beaumont Composite High School and has been a regular attendee of the CBYC. As a musician, Copley has also performed at youth centre events. After graduation, Copley plans to study film or business so he can realize his dream of becoming a music video director.

“Leif is the kind of student that kids are drawn to. He is kind to everyone and goes out of his way to include others,” said Kaley Taylor, one of Copley’s teachers, in his nomination for Youth of the Year. “Leif brings energy and enthusiasm to all he does and this encourages those around him.”

Several members of CBYC staff also commented on Copley’s commitment and dedication to pursuing his dreams, adding that he inspires and lifts up his fellow youth at every opportunity.

The Chantal Bérubé Memorial Fund is an ongoing fund that supports a number of youth-related initiatives in the Beaumont community, including the Youth of the Month program and a number of initiatives at the Chantal Bérubé Youth Centre.

The Youth of the Month award is open to any and all youth in Beaumont who should be recognized for their outstanding contributions or achievements. Teachers, parents or friends wanting to nominate a youth they know can do so through the CBYC website.

The CBYC also has a centre app with a calendar of upcoming events and profiles of all Youth of the Month winners.
