Beaumont was an art hotspot over the weekend to celebrate Alberta Culture Days with Play Readings in the Park.

Beaumont’s own RuminariLive arts gallery, and local theatre company Mask Mime & Mayhem, teamed up to bring the work of Albertan playwrights to residents of all ages, holding three different play readings in various parks around town over the weekend, Sept. 25-27.

“We had really good crowds. We had different people every single day,” said Hunter Gates, owner of RuminariLive. “We had three-year-olds all the way up to 80-year-olds so it was really lovely.”

Mask Mime & Mayhem, a new Beaumont production company focused on Canadian stage plays, held play readings of “Dawn Quixote” by Vern Thiessen and “Flight Risk” by Meg Braem on Friday and Sunday. On Saturday, RuminariLive’s teen program Be Magnetic read Rose Scollard’s western “Don’t Fence Me In”.

Each day and each reading was unique and offered its audiences a taste of something different for an arts and culture filled weekend, said Gates, as well as providing performers a chance to try out their skills off the traditional stage.

RuminariLive and Mask Mime & Mayhem will have plenty of opportunities this fall to take in more arts in Beaumont, and even participate. RuminariLive’s fall programming for teens and seniors remains open for any who want to try their hand at theatre. In December, there will be performances from the venue’s kids program, who will present “The Wizard of Oz,” as well as the seniors’ program.

On Oct. 11, auditions will be open for “The Play That Goes Wrong”, hosted at RuminariLive. The gallery will also be presenting Mask Mime & Mayhem’s one-woman show “I, Claudia” Oct. 16-18.
