Beaumont’s community youth centre celebrated 15 years serving the city’s youth last month.
A special birthday celebration was held at the Chantal Bérubé Youth Centre (CBYC) on Sept. 27, including games, food, cake, music and reconnecting.
Staff members and youth, both present and former, came out to celebrate and share their memories of the youth centre’s positive impact in the community and in the lives of Beaumont’s local youth.
“It was very well attended … and it stayed busy all night,” said Sarah Fodchuk, CBYC supervisor.
“The centre has a lot of history, being open 15 years, so lots of different youth from all walks of life have come here to access the services that the centre provides. We’ve had former youth come in, former staff come in, former students who did their practicums here come in.”
The youth centre, renamed on May 9, 2013, on what would have been Chantal Bérubé’s 30th birthday, continues to uphold her vision of a place for local youth to gather and find support.
“There was quite a bit of work that was done by the youth themselves and then with the assistance of other residents to have the centre renamed after Chantal,” said Camille Bérubé, Chantal’s father. “When we walk in to celebrate or to visit or to present the Youth of the Month awards, we know that there’s a piece of Chantal that resides in that gathering place … we definitely feel her presence there.”
He added that it was always Chantal’s goal to make a difference in the lives of the community’s youth, to ensure they had a positive place to come and be themselves.
“She also wanted the place to be a warm, caring and inclusive gathering place. And anytime we’ve gone in … the kids are very accepting of each other, and I know she would be really proud of that.”
The CBYC offers activities and engagement for youth of all ages and hosts a variety of events throughout the year specifically for Beaumont’s young residents. The centre has information and regular updates on its Facebook page or through the CBYC app.
