With the fall season in swing, the Beaumont Columbus Alberta Association is encouraging Beaumontonians to join in to help their community.

The Beaumont Columbus Alberta Association (BCCA) is a non-profit community group run by board members and volunteers who want to do their part to help others in the community. The BCCA’s annual general meeting is being held on Oct. 28 at Saint Vital Church, and everyone is welcome to attend.

“We just want to create community awareness and get new members,” said Maxine Cherwonka, a member of the BCCA. “We have such a small membership [this year], so we’d like to get the members and the community involved.”

The BCCA raises funds for various community organizations including local churches, schools, the Leduc & District Food Bank, Edmonton women’s shelters, youth and seniors services, kids summer camps and more through monthly bingos, casinos and an annual dinner show. The 2020 dinner show is scheduled for May 9 at the St. Vital Seniors Centre, featuring a Red Skelton impersonator for the night’s entertainment.

“We give all the money that we make away to pretty well anyone who asks. Our motto is ‘we are community’. We support the Leduc food bank, the Snack Attack program for the schools, children’s groups, cultural groups, the senior’s centre [and more],” Cherwonka said.

Since its founding in 1997, the BCCA has donated approximately $218,000 to community groups and organizations.

This winter, the BCCA will cohost its biggest show yet, Cherwonka added, with the St. Vital Senior’s Club and the Beaumont Society for the Arts. On Dec. 8 Vinok World Dance will present Christmas Around the World at the Centre Communautaire Beaumont Community Centre, featuring a cultural exploration of holiday dance.

“It’s beautiful,” Cherwonka said. “They’re just wonderful. I think [I’ve] seen them seven times and I’ll go again.”

Tickets for the BCCA’s Christmas show are on sale online. More information on the Beaumont Columbus Alberta Association can be found on the group’s Facebook page.
